Main Issues: May said one of the main responsibilities of the Circuit Court criminal judgeships is punishment, and sentences should be evaluated in each case based on the crime, the impact on the victim and the defendant’s circumstances. But he said the judgeship’s primary focus should be prevention.

“Currently, our children and communities are being killed and destroyed at an alarming rate. The criminal judge must make a conscious effort to change the mindset and redirect the thought processes of our youth,” he said. “The criminal judge cannot simply wait on our children/defendant(s) to appear in court before attempting to have an impact in our communities. The criminal judge must take an active role on a daily basis interacting with our communities. For a criminal judge to only attempt to become involved from the bench is a disservice to our community.”
