The Birmingham City Council has announced that its regularly scheduled March 12 meeting has been cancelled due to the absence of a majority of council members. The announcement was made Monday morning on the council’s Facebook page. It’s the second meeting of 2019 to be cancelled. The Jan. 29 meeting was cancelled because of the threat of inclement weather.

A majority of the council — William Parker, John Hilliard, Steven Hoyt, Wardine Alexander and Darrell O’Quinn — will be in Washington, D.C., attending the Just Economy Conference, which will feature panels of “experts and advocates sharing new developments, best practices, and innovative ideas for community reinvestment,” according to the conference’s website.

Parker is also slated to meet with Major League Baseball officials in D.C. Tuesday about plans for an MLB Youth Academy at George Ward Park. The proposed development drew criticism from residents of the park’s surrounding neighborhood, leading the MLB Youth Foundation to “reassess” their plans. Councilors have asked the MLBYF to “re-evaluate” its decision and will hold a vote on the proposal at their next meeting, March 19.
