Public Hearings Set on Use of By-Products Such as Sludge, Discharges from Gaston Steam Plant and a Toll Bridge Over Lay Lake
ADEM is conducting several public hearings in the next week.
Tuesday, a hearing will be conducted on proposed new standards for the beneficial use of by-products such as sludge, biosolids and waste from municipal, industrial and private sources. That hearing will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management office in Montgomery.

On Thursday, ADEM will hear comments on a proposal to renew Alabama Power Co.’s pollution discharge permit for the Gaston electric plant, near Wilsonville on the Coosa River. The permit regulates wastewater discharges into the river from the plant. The hearing will be at 6 p.m. at the Shelby County High School Auditorium, 101 Washington St., Columbiana.

Tuesday Jan. 13, a public hearing will be conducted on a plan to build a toll bridge across Lay Lake. Businessman Tim James has proposed to build the private bridge to connect I-65 in Calera to U.S. 280 in Sylacauga. Eastern access would be from Russell Chapel Road in Talladega County and western access from Shelby County Road 28. Tolls would be about $2 each way.
The hearing will be before the Talladega County Commission at 5:30 p.m. in that county’s courthouse, One Court Square, Talladega.
