Political experience: Successfully won two 6-year terms as Jefferson County Tax Assessor. First woman and first African American to hold the seat.
Professional experience: Entrepreneur; founder and owner of Wee Care Academy Childcare Centers since 1988.
Civic experience: Served on numerous boards and agencies across the state including: served on the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport for more than 16 years, including as the first female chair for more than nine years; led the airport through a $187 million renovation project; serves on the Alys Stephens Center advisory board, the Birmingham Zoo board, Birmingham Rotary and Birmingham Chapter of Links Inc.; active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Education: BA in sociology from LeMoyne-Owen College and an MBA from Rutgers University.
Main issues: “Continue to keep taxpayers informed of tax exemptions are required by the state. Lobby with state legislators to allow online tax exemption service to taxpayers. Take on the huge task of remapping Jefferson County to provide updated and accurate property boundaries.”
