The state posted a record number of COVID-19 cases on Friday, along with the highest number of patients in hospitals with the disease, the Alabama Department of Public Health reported.

There were 3,840 new cases of the coronavirus listed in the agency’s daily report, bringing the total for the pandemic to 264,199. It was the fourth consecutive day with more than 3,000 cases and the most ever for a single day that did not include figures from previous days.

Jefferson County continued to show high numbers, with 594 cases, while Madison County had 306.

But the spread of COVID-19 was most stark in counties with smaller populations: Marshall County (Albertville, Guntersville) listed 203 cases, Morgan County (Decatur) had 177 and Shelby Couty added 176.

Jackson County (Scottsboro) in the northeast corner of the state,  reported 119 new cases and continues to lead the state in per-capita cases over the past 14 days with a total of 1,697 per 100,000 population. Marshall County is second with 1,297 cases in the last two weeks. By comparison, Jefferson County had 810 cases; Shelby County, 771, Madison County, 692; and Mobile Couty, 353 per 100,000 residents.

For the first time since the pandemic began, Alabama is averaging more than 3,000 cases per day over a one-week period. That figure stood at 3,046 after Friday’s report.

A total of 26,062 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March, ADPH reported. It said 1,827 people were in Alabama hospitals for treatement of the disease on Thursday, eclipsing the previous day’s record of 1,794.
