The number of COVID-19 cases in Alabama has eclipsed the 300,000 mark, and the number of people in hospitals for the disease has risen to an all-time high, the state Department of Public Health reported Tuesday.

The agency’s dashboard showed 3,638 new cases of the coronavirus, raising the state’s total to 301,533 since the pandemic began in March. ADPH said 538 of the new cases in Tuesday’s report were from late lab reports covering the period of Sept. 29 to Dec. 12 — leaving a total of 3,100 cases for the day.

There were 22 additional deaths, for a total of 4,124 overall.

Hospitals across the state reported 2,286 COVID inpatients on Monday. The daily number has grown steadily since the beginning of December, when the count was 1,779. Overall, 28,913 Alabamians have been hospitalized with the virus.

Clarke County, in the southwest quadrant of the state, took over as the county with the highest number of new cases per 100,000 population over the past two weeks. The county’s per-capita number rose to 2,045. Jackson County, in the northeast corner of the state, had been the leader in that category for several weeks, but its number fell from 1,993 on Sunday to 1,885 on Monday.
