Alabama reported 171 deaths from COVID-19 and 3,355 new cases of the disease in Saturday’s 24-hour update by the state Department of Public Health.

Those figures brought the state’s totals since the pandemic began in March to 6,657 deaths and 439,442 cases.

The state averaged 2,680 new cases of the coronavirus per day over the past week. That is down from a daily average of 3,076 cases a week on Jan. 16 and 3,714 on Jan. 1.

The number of deaths reported Saturday was the highest of this week, topping the total of 157 reported Wednesday. ADPH notes that its daily updates for deaths often reflect cases from two weeks or more earlier because of the way they are reported to the state from local areas.

Saturday’s report said 223,887 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had been administered in the state through Friday. That is 44.51% if the 502,950 doses that have been delivered to Alabama. It said 73,587 doses had been administered this week, up from 59,397 the previous week and 44,910 for the week ending Jan. 9.
