The number of cases of COVID-19 in Alabama has risen steadily over the past week as the state’s vaccination rate remains among the lowest in the nation.

The state averaged 227 new cases a day for the week that ended Wednesday, up from an average of 153 a day one week earlier. The Alabama Department of Public Health reported a total of 550,451 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The weekly average number of cases peaked at 4,281 a day on Jan. 6 and fell to a low of 153 on June 23. It crept upward to 182 on Friday and 205 on Monday before reaching 227 on Wednesday.

ADPH reported that 1,508,748 Alabamians have been fully vaccinated. That represents 30% of the population. Alabama has ranked at the bottom, or just above Mississippi, among vaccination rates nationally for the past several weeks.

ADPH reported a total of 11,352 deaths from the coronavirus over the course of the pandemic, including 24 during the past week.

Alabama hospitals were treating 181 COVID-19 patients on June 26, the last day reported by ADPH. That compared to 278 inpatients a month earlier and a high of 3,084 on Jan. 11.
