Medical West Hospital Authority broke ground Wednesday on a 200-bed hospital with a five-story medical office building. The facility, on 4501 Bell Hill Road in McCalla, is expected to open in 2024 and will replace the authority’s current hospital.

“Our current facility was built in 1964 and although multiple renovations have been made throughout the years, we knew that a new facility would have to be part of our future growth plans,” Medical West CEO Keith Pennington said in a statement released by UAB. “We could not be more excited to work with this exceptional team of firms that will help us welcome this new state-of-the-art hospital to the residents of West Jefferson County.”

The hospital being built by the authority, an affiliate of the UAB Health System, will be nine stories and 412,000 square feet, and it will include a surgical and endoscopy suite, state-of-the-art imaging technology and more intensive care beds. The medical office building will be 127,000 square feet.

The development is being funded mostly by a grant from the USDA, and the total investment in the project is $400 million.

Concourse, Raymond James, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, GNC, and Maynard, Cooper & Gale worked on the financial side of the deal after the property was found by Cushman & Wakefield/EGS Commercial Real Estate of Birmingham.

CBRE is project manager, and the design and build team includes Brasfield & Gorrie as the general contractor, HKS and KPS as the architects and CCI, Bhate Geosciences and Building & Earth as the site engineers.
