After some spirited debate and two rounds of balloting, the Executive Committee of the Jefferson County Democratic Party left the Five Points West Library on Saturday with its nominee for county treasurer in the November general election.

Angela Webb-Weinberg outpolled LaShunta White Boler and former treasurer Mike Miles. Webb-Weinberg was the top vote-getter after the first ballot with 32, but that fell short of the requisite majority of present and voting committee members.

Webb-Weinberg beat Miles 37-30 in the final tally. Seventy-five committee members were present and 67 voted. A few persons abstained.

Party Chairman Wayne Rogers acknowledged that Saturday’s meeting was occasionally heated.

“I would say a little, but it’s nothing that political meetings don’t have happen all the time, honestly,” he said. “It was obviously some tense moments but many of our meetings have tense moments. It was maybe, probably a little more tense because there were some pretty significant decisions being made, but the Jefferson County Democratic Party makes significant decisions oftentimes.”

Rogers said Saturday’s meeting included some “healthy debate.”

“Sometimes, folks get in the heat of the moment and say things that they probably would prefer to have said in a different or a better way,” he said. “Certainly, that happens to me. But yeah, there was some tension. There was some heated debate and that’s okay. It’s healthy, we’re a democracy and we chose a very fine candidate.”

Webb-Weinberg had been on the ballot running for assistant tax collector but dropped out of that race to accept the treasurer nomination.

The executive committee’s decision was needed after incumbent Eyrika Parker and challenger Mara Ruffin Allen both were removed from the March 5 primary ballot for failing to file their statements of economic interest.

The Alabama Ethics Commission subsequently ruled that persons who were removed from the ballot of the primary cannot be their party’s nominee in the general election. That meant that the Jefferson County Democratic Party could not nominate Parker or Allen to be the party’s candidate for Jefferson County treasurer.

With no Republican set to challenge for the seat, most likely Webb-Weinberg will be the county treasurer, barring a successful independent or write-in candidate.

“We certainly hope so. That’s our hope,” Rogers said. “I will say there is a hearing set (Tuesday) in a case that was filed back in late December by Mara Ruffin Allen, one of the disallowed candidates.”

Allen on Friday filed a motion for preliminary injunction. A virtual hearing on the matter is set for Tuesday before Montgomery County Judge Brooke Reid.

Rogers said the executive committee could have nominated someone for the constable District 15 race but no one showed up to qualify for that position.
