The Alabama Department of Public Health reported 4,232 new cases of COVID-19 and 89 deaths in its daily update on Thursday.

The state has recorded 338,801 cases of the coronavirus and 4,676 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began in March.

The agency has reported an average of 4,067 new cases a day over the past week. The average was 1,241 a day on Nov. 1 and 2,291 on Dec. 1.

A total of 31,651 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19, including 2,535 who were in hospitals across the state on Wednesday.

Jefferson County reported 763 new cases and 28 deaths in the Christmas eve report. The state’s most populous county’s overall totals are 48,517 cases and 658 deaths. Mobile County was second in both categories with 323 new cases and 13 deaths, raising its totals to 24,325 and 481, respectively.
