There were 954 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths from the disease during the past 24 hours, the Alabama Department of Public Health reported Friday morning.

The additions brought the state’s total to 156,698 cases, including 138,989 confirmed and 17,709 probable. A confirmed case is one for which a person has been tested and shown positive for the coronavirus. A probable case is one involving a person who has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and has symptoms of the disease but has not been tested, or a person who was reported positive on a rapid antigen test.

There have been 2,550 deaths from COVID-19 in the state since the pandemic began. That includes 2,409 confirmed and 141 probable.

Jefferson County had 134 new cases, the most in the state, and a total of 20,442 overall. No other county reported a number of new cases in triple digits.
