Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has tested positive for COVID-19. He announced the news in a press release Wednesday evening that quotes him as saying his symptoms are “currently mild.”

While the mayor is self-quarantining, he is “still handling matters of the city,” according to the press release.

Woodfin was tested Wednesday afternoon and received his results this evening.

“Everyone, please remember that COVID is real,” Woodfin said in his press release. “Please be safe and protect yourselves and your loved ones.’’

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith is in quarantine after joining Woodfin in a press conference about crime, ABC 33/40 reported Wednesday afternoon.

COVID-19 has presented the most significant crisis of Woodfin’s mayorship so far. It has taken a large bite out of the city’s business tax revenue, leading to a significant budget shortfall, which in turn led to Woodfin’s controversial decision to furlough more than 100 workers in September, mostly from the library and parks board. It was announced earlier this month that those workers would be returning to work thanks to Cares Act funding.
