Political experience: Running for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives, District 7. Has served in the seat since being elected in November 2010. Currently sits on the House Committee on Ways and Means and is ranking member of the subcommittee on oversight and a member of the subcommittees on trade and social security. Also sits on the Committee on House Administration, where she serves as ranking member of the subcommittee on elections. Voting rights task force chairwoman for the Congressional Black Caucus.

Professional experience: Law partner, Maynard Cooper & Gale in Birmingham, 2005-2011; Law associate/partner, Davis Polk and Wardwell, New York City & London, England, 1995-2005. Member, American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Magic City Bar Association.

Education: Graduated Harvard Law School, 1992; Oxford University, 1988; Princeton University, 1986; and Selma High School valedictorian, 1982.

Civic experience: Birmingham Chapter, The Links Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Main issues: Affordability is a top issue for Sewell. She lists delivering affordable housing, lowering energy prices and fighting against Trump’s trade wars as issues she’s currently working on in Congress. Continuing her focus on protecting workers and expanding economic opportunities for Alabama. Providing access to quality affordable healthcare by expanding Medicaid; saving rural hospitals, expanding rural medical transportation services and training more medical providers.

Protecting voting rights continues as a top priority for Sewell, who also want to modernize Alabama infrastructure, including by providing clean water and sewers in rural areas, bringing in more federal money for Alabama’s roads and bridges, investing in public transportation and expanding broadband coverage in the state. Protecting schools and school funding, along with the federal Department of Education, HBCU’s and diversity of voices on college campuses. Reforming the VA, protecting veterans’ benefits and protecting Social Security.
