There are times when an unfamiliar company comes to the Jefferson County Commission for an economic development package.
Thursday was not one of those times.
“They’ve been here from its (the company’s) inception,” Commission President Jimmie Stephens said of Brasfield & Gorrie. “They’ve chosen to remain here although they are a worldwide company, to be right here in Birmingham, Alabama.”
Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to provide a jobs grant to the company for the expansion of its headquarters campus on 7th Avenue South. The expansion includes a new office tower, parking deck expansion, a new training and event center and a wellness center.
Brasfield & Gorrie is making a $64,584,500 investment with $2,884,500 for land, $56,100,000 for building and $5,600,000 for equipment. The expansion will produce 80 new jobs with an hourly wage of $39.51.
The jobs grant from the county will be capped at $240,000.
The county’s anticipated return on investment is $8,000 to the general fund and $1,011,773 to the education fund.
“Thank you for your confidence that you’ve shown in our county,” Stephens said. “We’ll continue to be good partners with you and moving forward.”
