Alabama’s elections to choose Republican and Democratic nominees for offices from governor to assistant tax collector are being held Tuesday despite the ongoing legal battle over district lines in the congressional races.
Most of the ballot is unaffected by that battle, though voters are currently set to return Aug. 11 to vote for candidates in Congressional Districts 6 and 7, which are in the Birmingham area, and Districts 1 and 2, in South Alabama.

On the tops of the tickets in both parties Tuesday, voters will be selecting candidates to run in November for governor and U.S. Senate. Other statewide races on one or both ballots include lieutenant governor, attorney general and Public Service commissioners.
Democratic voters in Jefferson County will be choosing a candidate for sheriff, two County Commission seats, assistant tax collector, district court judge and several legislative seats. Republican voters in Jefferson County will be selecting several candidates for legislative seats.
Also on the ballot are two amendments, one that expands the crimes for which a suspect may be denied bail and another that would prevent governments from cutting a district attorney’s pay mid-term.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday across the region. To find information about local candidates on Tuesday’s ballot and what you need to know before going to vote, visit BirminghamWatch’s 2026 Elections Voter Guide.
