With highs predicted to go into the upper 90s today through Thursday, daytime cooling stations have been activated across the city to give anyone in need a reprieve from the heat and humidity.
The cooling stations, in public spaces such as libraries, recreation centers and churches, offer residents a place to cool down and hydrate to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the heat, but at extreme temperatures, anyone without reliable air conditioning can be at risk.
The daytime centers open whenever temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher, including the heat index or “feels like” temperature.
Central Alabama is under a heat wave advisory through Thursday at 9 p.m. The National Weather Service is predicting the heat index could reach up to 108 degrees those days, with real temperatures of about 95 degrees each day through Saturday.
Cooling stations are available in every quadrant of the city and include the Birmingham Public Library Central Branch, Five Points West Library, North Birmingham Library, Southside Library, Woodlawn Library, Harrison Recreation Center, the city’s Fitness Center, Faith Chapel Care Center, Firehouse Ministries, One Roof and Pathways. Complete details can be found here.
