Alabama added 226 deaths from COVID-19 in Tuesday’s daily report by the state Department of Public Health.

There have been 5,573 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began in March, the agency reported. ADPH’s daily updates show the number of deaths reported each day, but officials say there is an average delay of two weeks between the date a death occurs and when when it is reported to the state.

The report listed 58 deaths in Jefferson County, bringing its total for the pandemic to 842. The Jefferson County Health Department has reported 87 coronavirus deaths in the county so far this month. With deaths actually being reported several days after they occur, figures so far show these deaths by date this year: Jan. 9, 8 deaths; Jan. 8, 28; Jan. 7, 10, Jan. 6, 13; Jan 5, 3; Jan. 4, 3; Jan. 2, 0; and Jan. 1, 22.

Tuesday’s ADPH report showed 3,848 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the state’s overall total ot 407,848. The state has averaged 4,036 new cases a daily over the past week. The seven-day averages were 3,970 one week ago and 3,714 on Jan. 1.

A record 3,088 people were in Alabama hospitals for treatment of COVID-19 on Monday, the report said.
