The Alabama Department of Public Health reported a large increase Wednesday in the number of new cases of COVID-19 in the state, but officials said the figures include older information from a testing lab.

The agency’s daily dashboard showed 1,147 total new cases of the disease, up from 571 in the previous day’s report.

“We had a large out of state entity transmit data on September 29 which increased our daily number of cases for September 29 and our cumulative total for our September 30 dashboard update,” ADPH posted on its dashboard. “When ADPH becomes aware of a new lab performing SARS-CoV-2 testing, ADPH educates the labs regarding uploading data in a timely, accurate electronic format. As these labs were not reporting to ADPH until they understood the requirement, their data contains older reports which increases case numbers.”

The dashboard listed 154,701 cases in Alabama since the pandemic began in March. That includes 137,564 cases that are confirmed to have been from the disease and 17,137 that are listed as probable.

There were 23 new deaths in the daily report, pushing the state’s total for the pandemic to 2,540 — 2,399 confirmed cases and 141 listed as probable.

Jefferson County showed 283 new cases, raising its total to 20,221. Tuscaloosa County accounted to 192 new cases for a total of 9,029. The numbers listed for new cases likely reflect the inclusion of the late lab reports.
