The Alabama Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported 4,979 new cases of COVID-19 and 63 deaths from the disease in its 24-hour update.

The state has totaled 329,811 cases of the coronavirus and 4,452 deaths since the pandemic began in March.

Tuesday’s update increased the average number of new cases per day for the past week to 4,040, the highest weekly average so far. The seven-day average was 3,553 one week earlier and 2,291 on Dec. 1. The state averaged 38 deaths a day over the past week, up from 16 per day for the week that ended Dec. 1.

The number of people in hospitals for the coronavirus also continued its climb, with ADPH reporting a record 2,526 on Monday. The average number of hospitalizations per day for the past week stood at 2,393, compared two 1,592 at the beginning of this month.

UAB reported that it was treating 185 inpatients for COVID-19 on Monday, its highest count of the pandemic. The hospital had 127 coronavirus inpatents at the beginning of the month.
