COVID-19 Numbers Continue to Fluctuate, With 528 New Cases Sunday

Alabama's COVID-19 rate continued its fluctuations on Sunday, with 528 new cases and two deaths reported by the state Department of Public Health. The new figures raised the state's overall total to 110,094 confirmed cases and 1,944 deaths since the pandemic began in mid-March. In addition, 4,966 cases and 69 deaths were listed as probably from the disease. The daily number of new cases has ranged from a low of 516 to a high to a high of 1,220 over the past week. The average for the period is 859 per day. For this month, the highest number of cases was 2,013 on Aug. 2 and the lowest was 516 on Aug. 17. Read more.

No Improprieties in Possible Switch of Jeffco Auditor, Former CFO Says

None of the improprieties suggested in Wednesday’s Jefferson County Commission took place, former Jefferson County Chief Financial Officer John Henry told Birmingham Watch today. Henry said County Manager Tony Petelos and Commission Finance Chairman Joe Knight knew of his advice concerning a possible switch from Warren Averett to Banks Finley as the county’s primary auditor. Commissioners had a sometimes-heated discussion Wednesday about a resolution to extend for three years the county’s contract with Warrant Averett, a white-owned accounting firm. The discussion included the suggestion that a deal had been brokered to change to the Black-owned firm Banks Finley. Commissioner Lashunda Scales said during the meeting that extending the contract to the white-owned firm was a throwback to the days when the county did not consider racial and gender diversity in its hiring practices. Commissioners ultimately passed a substitute motion by Scales to reduce the extension to one year, at which point a change could be considered. Daily COVID-19 Count Shows Big Decline to 321 Cases

The COVID-19 count took another dramatic drop Friday, with the Alabama Department of Public Health reporting only 321 confirmed new cases for the latest 24-hour period.  That was the lowest daily count since 390 cases were reported on June 17. It brought the average daily number for the past week to 801, the lowest since an average of 764 on June 28. The figures brought Alabama's total number of cases since the pandemic began in mid-Marsh to 107,804; Friday's 16 deaths left the total at 1,921. Another 4,966 cases and 69 deaths are listed as probably associated with the coronavirus.  Read more.
