The sales breaks began at 12:01 a.m. Friday and run through the end of the day Sunday.
Items exempt from state sales taxes include:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less.
- School supplies valued at $50 or less.
- Books that cost $30 or less.
- Tablets, laptops, computers and printers with a selling price of $750 or less.

During the weekend, the state waives its 4% sales tax on school-related supplies and clothing. Most Birmingham-area cities also are waiving sales taxes on these items during the weekend, as is Shelby County. Jefferson County is waiving 1 cent of its sales taxes.
