Alabama recorded 3,588 new cases of COVID-19 and 185 deaths from the disease in Thursday’s daily update by the state Department of Public Health.

There have been 414,583 cases of the disease in the state since the pandemic began in March. The death toll stands at 5,945.

ADPH said on its website that the unusually high number of deaths reported this week — a total of 598 have been listed over the past three days — resulted from old cases that are just now being reported.

The state averaged 3,622 new cases a day over the past week. That is up from a seven-day average of 3,332 on Jan. 1 but down from the average of 4,001 a week ago.
