Education: Lawley received his undergraduate degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his doctorate from Washington University School of Law. He also graduated from the National Judicial College.
Political experience: Lawley was appointed to the Place 2 seat on the bench in 2007 and served until 2008, when he was defeated in the general election. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Jefferson County District Court in 2000 and 2012.
Civic experience: He served as assistant press secretary for former U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin and worked on several campaigns. He has a private civil and criminal practice in Birmingham; an associate in a Washington law firm, 1992-94; assistant district attorney in Madison County, 1990-92. He is a member of the Birmingham, Alabama and Washington, D.C., bar associations and the Federalist Society.
