Leticia Watkins Harvill

 Political experience: Elected to Birmingham Board of Education, 2021.

 Professional experience: Executive director, Sixth Avenue Development Corp., 2023-present; director of children and youth, Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, 2014-present. Formerly assistant coordinator with Virginia State University, assistant program director at UAB and scientist with Pharmaceutical Product Development.

Education: Bachelor of science in biology, minor in chemistry, Virginia Commonwealth University; master’s in medical science, UAB; completed the Public Education Leadership Project at Harvard University.

Civic experience: Member of STAIR board; launched free student center for BCS remote learners during pandemic and directed meal program for students; created school-based mentoring program in West End; partnered with Birmingham Talks to bring early literacy classes to District 6 families; president of Titusville Youth Sports Association; member of Birmingham Coalition for Student Mental Health and adviser of Solutions, a youth conflict resolution initiative.

Main Issues: As a member of the Board of Education, Harvill has chaired the Policy Committee and has served on the Science Textbook Selection, Calendar, and Superintendent Evaluation Committees. Worked with business to establish a hydroponics lab in the middle school in her district. Worked with educators to launch the state of Alabama’s first-ever Dual Language Immersion program. Committed to the community and partnering with service-based organizations.
