Professional experience: Catastrophic claims adjuster for Pilot Insurance; former chief operating officer, Wise Technology in Fairhope; retired educator, was a principal, assistant principal and teacher in Hoover City Schools, teacher in Mobile County Public Schools; 1997 Alabama State Teacher of the Year.
Education: Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education, Winthrop College; Ed.S in educational leadership, University of Montevallo; Ed.D in educational leadership, Samford University.
Civic experience: Has served on numerous state, regional and national educational boards; founder and former president and executive director of the Alabama Conference of Educators; Alabama State Teacher Forum, past president; helped establish Magic City Physical Educators and Coaches in 1993.
Main issues: Litaker has an education-first platform that would include ending the Department of Education bureaucracy, putting decisions in the hands of parents and teachers, overhauling curriculum, supporting professional development for teachers, bolstering rural education and digital literacy programs.
Saying Alabama’s health care system is rated low overall and worse in Black Belt areas, Litaker said she would work to invest in rural health care, both on infrastructure and programs such as home-care services. She also pledges to work for wise spending and make her actions transparent to voters.
