The Office: Birmingham Board of Education, District 8

The Duties: The nine members of the Birmingham Board of Education work with the superintendent to establish a vision for the school system by adopting goals and policies that address student needs, advance student performance and regulate overall operations of the system. The board also approves operating budgets, reviews data to monitor implementation of policies and programs, and advocates for the needs, resources and interests of students.

The Area: District 8 includes Ensley and surrounding neighborhoods in the Birmingham city limits.
