Residence: Birmingham 

Political experience: Alabama State Senate, 4 terms, 2006-present; Alabama House of Representatives, 1 term, 2002-2006; Birmingham City Council, 1985-1997.

Professional experience: Retired from the City of Birmingham, where she was the ADA compliance administrator in the Department of Planning and Engineering. She also has worked for other government and nonprofit organizations, including Birmingham Public Schools as a special education teacher, the American Federation of Teachers as field staff and union president in Birmingham, the American Red Cross and the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. 

Civic experience: Past and present service includes membership on the boards of the American Red Cross Birmingham Regional, Birmingham Visitors and Convention Bureau, Positive Maturity, Alabama Head Injury Foundation, Alabama Industries for the Deaf & Blind (Birmingham); past president of the Birmingham Parks & Recreation Board;  membership on the Birmingham Planning Commission, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Jefferson County Board of Coroners, Alabama Department of Youth Services, The Lakeshore Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Regional Director, National Foundation of Women Legislators; 2nd vice president and corresponding secretary of the National Foundation for Women Legislators; special staff for Rutgers University Project 2012, and National Black Caucus Elected Officials. She has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics, as a Red Cross  disaster trainer and at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She is a  member of the Knights of Peter Claver (St. Cecelia Court 144) and Delta Sigma Sorority, and served 16 years as a Pratt Community officer in Birmingham.

Education: Westfield High School in Jefferson County, Alabama A&M University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with further studies at Birmingham-Southern and Samford universities. She is a licensed Realtor/broker and has ADA certification from UAB. 

Main issues: Working for safer communities, fighting for social justice, equitable education, and economic development and equal opportunities.
