Residence: Birmingham

Political experience: Serving her sixth term representing Alabama’s 7th Congressional District; is the first black woman to serve in the state’s congressional delegation. Currently the chief deputy whip, and she sits on the House Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittees on health, select revenue measures and Social Security. Member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the New Democrat Coalition; co-chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus; vice chair of the Congressional HBCU Caucus

Professional experience: Before her election, was a partner in the Birmingham law office of Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C., where she specialized in public finance law.

Education: Graduated from Princeton University, master’s in politics from Oxford University, law degree from Harvard Law School. Graduated from Selma High School.

Main issues: Advocates for jobs creation, workforce development, skills training and providing resources and economic opportunities for constituents. Has implemented an Annual Job Fair and job readiness workshops across the district as a part of a workforce initiative called Project R.E.A.D.Y. champion for recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of those freedom fighters who served as powerful agents of change.
