UAB public health officials are encouraging everyone eligible to get vaccinated for COVID-19 as it sees an increase in hospitalizations in the aftermath of Memorial Day.

The hospital has seen an increase from 11 active cases over the weekend to 20 active cases Tuesday morning, according to a statement from UAB Hospital. The hospital is caring for a total of 48 COVID patients, counting those who still are contagious and those who still are battling the effects of the disease but are no longer contagious.

The number of new COVID cases in the state was unknown because the Alabama Department of Public Health no longer updates case counts daily, but on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, instead.
