The Alabama Department of Public Health reported 784 new cases of COVID-19 in Wednesday’s daily update.

The report brought the number of cases of the coronavirus to 167,977 over the course of the pandemic. That includes 147,745 confirmed cases and 20,232 listed as probable.

The latest figures show 2,706 deaths from COVID-19 in Alabama, 41 more than the total from Tuesday’s report. The Health Department said that did not indicate there were 41 deaths for the latest 24-hour period, but many of those could have occurred over a number of days. A spokeswoman for the agency said, “On average, it usually takes a couple of weeks for deaths to appear on the Dashboard.”

There was a slight dip in the number of people being treated for the disease in hospitals around the state, from 856 on Monday to 823 the following day.

Once again, Jefferson County had the most new cases, with a count of 94 to bring its total to 21,746.
