Violent Crime Down Slightly for This Year So Far but Car Thefts Soar

Crime in Birmingham is running behind last year’s rate, at least for most crimes.

Auto thefts are up more than 30% year to date over last year’s numbers, 170 already this year compared to 129 this time last year, according to this week’s crime summary released by the Birmingham Police Department. On the other hand, there have been three fewer murders so far this year compared to this time last year, with seven.

There has been a 22.6% drop in total violent crime reports, with 205 complaints in the city so far this year compared to 265 this time last year.

Total property crimes are up slight, 3.8 percent, with 928 complaints so far this year to last year’s 894 last year.

The department last week recovered 28 firearms, bringing the total for the year to 159. Last year at this time, 149 firearms had been recovered for the year.
