Thursday Is the Deadline for City Students to Apply for Birmingham Promise Scholarships

Seniors in Birmingham City Schools have until Thursday to apply for Birmingham Promise scholarships to attend college tuition-free.

The program covers students pursuing four-year degrees, two-year community college degrees or shorter certificate programs.

Since the program launched in 2020, it has provided more than $11 million in tuition assistance to more than 1,600 Birmingham graduates, according to a news release from the city. The scholarships provide last-dollar assistance, meaning they cover tuition and fees not covered by other sources of financial aid, including Pell grants.

Seniors in the city schools should have received a link to the application in their Outlook email school account. Anyone with questions or needing help can email scholarships@birminghampromise.org or call 205-843-5967. More information about the program can be found here.

Students applying for the Birmingham Promise program also must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly called FAFSA. That requires detailed financial documents. Information for filing that application can be found here.

“Birmingham Promise is about making sure our students have a foundation for a solid financial future and a pathway to achieve their dreams,” said Samantha Williams, executive director of Birmingham Promise. “Whether they want to become a mechanic, a lawyer, a chef or a nurse, Birmingham Promise is here to help.”
