A resolution passed today by the Jefferson County Commission allows residents to get rid of some debris from severe storms that rolled through earlier this week.

Commissioners authorized staffers with the Roads and Transportation Department to collect vegetative debris – trees, branches and limbs – that came down. Residents in unincorporated Jefferson County can put appropriate storm debris in the right of way to be collected.

“This is not a routine thing,” Roads and Transportation Director Chris Nicholson said. “We were allowing the commission to pass this resolution to allow us to do this for typical storm events. They passed it (and) they allowed us to pick up just the storm debris.”

Commissioners stressed that only “vegetative debris” be put out for pick up.

“We don’t want to see any couches,” Commission President Jimmie Stephens said.

Nicholson clarified later that his department is only providing the storm debris service in unincorporated parts of the county.

“Just unincorporated (areas) that we maintain,” he said. “The city limits will be up to the cities to handle however they want.”
