Extremely cold temperatures moving in tonight after periods of rain throughout the day have prompted closings and warnings across the Birmingham area.

The Birmingham area is under a cold weather advisory from midnight through 10 a.m. Monday but is not part of a state of emergency the governor declared last week for 19 northern counties because of predicted wintry weather.

Most school systems will be closed or on e-learning schedules for Monday, some into Tuesday morning. Several other governments also had announced they would be closing offices Monday, including Jefferson County, Mountain Brook and Midfield.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is warning of the risk that black ice will form on roadways, particularly on bridges and elevated structures, and urging motorists to drive with extreme caution. The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency issued similar warnings.

Alabama Power also has crews responding as needed to power outages and issued tips for customers to weather the cold. The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport also released a statement warning travelers there could be delays considering the weather locally and across the country and advised them to check on their flights through their airlines.

Last week, fears of icing across the Birmingham area grew as forecasts predicted active precipitation while temperatures plummeted. But more recent forecasts shifted the danger of icing northward.

NWS Forecasts Bitterly Cold Temps

The National Weather Service forecast for Birmingham updated Sunday evening predicts temperatures could dip to 19 overnight tonight with cloudy skies. Monday is predicted to be sunny with a high near 32 and gusty winds during the day with a clear sky and low of 13 predicted for Monday night. Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a high near 38 and a low of 221 before Temperatures rise to 41 on Wednesday.

Shelters Open

In advance of the cold weather, the city of Birmingham announced the opening of shelters and warming centers.

Jimmie Hale Mission will open its nightly warming station and shelter from 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday evenings through the next morning when temperatures rise above freezing. The mission is at 3420 2nd Ave. N in downtown Birmingham. Only men are allowed in the overnight shelter, but women and children may go to the warming station, and food will be provided. Shelter for women and children will be provided at Pathways, at 409 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd.

The Birmingham Xpress rapid transit line will continue its stops in front of the mission as long as service is able to safely continue, and the service will be free. But the shuttle service will not be available because of the potential for icy roads.

Donations of handwarmers and meals are requested. Sign up to support Jimmie Hall Mission and Pathways Home.

Other day shelters that will be open for those who need a warm refuge include:

  • Church of the Reconciler, 112 14th St. N: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and Sundays, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Faith Chapel Care Center, 921 2nd Ave. N: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
