Some Schools Delay Opening Tuesday as Freeze Begins to Lift

After another bitterly cold but clear night, the Birmingham area is getting back to routine Tuesday with most offices on normal schedules. But some school systems are delaying opening by two hours because of frigid temperatures and the possibility of lingering black ice on some roads and bridges.

The Birmingham area is under a cold weather advisory from midnight through 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, with temperatures projected to dip to 14 overnight and remain below 20 degrees past 8 a.m. But then the day is expected to reach a freeze-snapping 40 degrees by about 3 p.m.

Shelters are open again to help people deal with the cold. The Jimmie Hale Mission opened its nightly warming station and shelter from 6 p.m. Monday until temperatures rise above freezing Tuesday. The mission is at 3420 2nd Ave. N in downtown Birmingham. Only men are allowed in the overnight shelter, but women and children may go to the warming station, and food will be provided. Shelter for women and children will be provided at Pathways, at 409 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd.

Jimmie Hale Mission in a post said it is expecting heightened use of the warming station over the next two weeks. To sign up to support the mission or provide meals in the coming days, visit Jimmie Hall Mission and Pathways Home.

Other day shelters open for those who need a warm refuge include: Church of the Reconciler, at 112 14th St. N., Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and Sundays, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; and Faith Chapel Care Center, 921 2nd Ave. N., Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
