Birmingham has postponed all in-person court appearances in its municipal courts beginning Monday because of rising COVID-19 cases.

A statement released by the Municipal Court said scheduled appearances — including for hearings in misdemeanor, traffic and parking cases — have been postponed until further notice. It said the court will mail notices of rescheduled cases.

After a drop in cases not long ago, coronavirus has taken a turn for the worse in Alabama in the past few weeks.

The state added 1,347 new cases of coronavirus to its total Friday, pushing the state’s total number of cases to 190,496. The 7-day average of new cases per days has gone up every day this week and is now at 1,200.

Hospitalizations also have been on the rise and topped 1,000 this week for the first time in more than two months. Hospitalizations fell just below that mark on Friday, to 979.
