Birmingham Council Approves Zoning for Car Condo Near Barber
The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved a zoning change that will allow a developer to build a 105-unit car condominium near Barber Motorsports Park and Museum.
Ray Roll, director of development for Torque Motor Suites, told the council that the proposed development would provide collectors of high-end automobiles a place to store their vehicles.
The Birmingham site will offer climate-controlled units starting at 1,600 square feet with features such as mezzanine level and full bar area. According to the company’s website, the spaces will start in the low $300,000s.
The measure, approved unanimously Tuesday, changed the land at 5955 Barber Motorsports Parkway and 969 Rex Lake Road from a Planned Manufacturing zone to a Planned Recreation District.
Kim Speorl, the city’s zoning administrator, told the council that the change had been recommended by the zoning advisory committee, and the development received unanimous support from the local neighborhood association.
The measure to make the zoning change was filed by both Roll and the city of Birmingham, and the council members expressed their support for the project Tuesday.
“This is a really cool new amenity to what is already an internationally recognized motorsports park and museum,” Council President Darrell O’Quinn said. “I feel like this will help to enhance the user experience in a major way. There is a lot more stuff that happens at Barber Motorsports Park than just the big races. It’s a very active facility, and I can see this really work well alongside that – making it convenient for car owners to have their equipment located in the same footprint basically, negating the need for specialized transport. This is really exciting for the city of Birmingham.”
The news from Birmingham comes as the city of Leeds in July approved a proposal for a waterfront-style resort with hotels, a regional sports park and a 700-home residential neighborhood planned off Interstate 20 Exit 140. Barber Motorsports Park is about four miles off the same exit. The area also boasts the Grand River Outlet Mall, Bass Pro Shops and Buc-ee’s.
Cornell Wesley, director of Birmingham’s Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, said local officials are excited for the possibilities that growth in the area of the park could yield.
“When you have a development of major parcels, when that first economic anchor arrives, then naturally you have many other suitors who will follow behind, and we want to be positioned as a city and as a region to receive such an investment,” Wesley said.
