Birmingham Nears Year’s End With Mixed Crime Numbers
The city of Birmingham released its most recent crime stats Friday, showing that, while nonviolent crimes such as burglary, auto theft and theft numbers have increased this year, violent crimes still are down somewhat.
The city reported 125 murders so far this year, down 10 from this time last year. Forty-four rapes have been investigated in the city, down from 68 last year. The numbers reflect cases the police have classified as criminal and might not reflect some reports of homicide and rape, for instance.
The biggest jump in crimes reported by the city was in auto thefts, which are up 24% compared to last year, with 1,759 reports so far in 2023.
A Birmingham Police Department statement also said 1,887 firearms have been recovered this year, down some from the 2,029 firearms recovered this time last year.
