There will be a lot of gold in Birmingham’s Uptown Entertainment District as the Birmingham Bowl kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Protective Stadium.

The game pits the gold and white-clad Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-5) of the Atlantic Coast Conference against the black and gold Vanderbilt Commodores (6-6) of the Southeastern Conference. The game is being broadcast on ESPN.

The party downtown kicks off with tailgating beginning at 10 a.m. and including live music and a Kids Zone, among other activities.

Shuttles are available to and from the Protective Stadium area. One line runs to the Hyatt at Riverchase Galleria, and the other to Marriott Birmingham and DoubleTree by Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park. More details are available here.

Information about buying tickets, parking and other details is available on the Protective website.

This is the 18th edition of the bowl game that’s been played in the Magic City. The first 14 were played at Legion Field before the event shifted downtown to Protective Stadium in 2021. Since the bowl began in 2006, there’s been a combined $181 million economic impact for the Birmingham area, the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated.

The Johns family drove 11 hours from Tampa for the Birmingham Bowl, arriving at 3:30 a.m. Thursday. While they are fans of the Commodores, they are bigger fans of piccolo player Beth Johns, a Belmont University sophomore who marches with the Spirit of Gold Vanderbilt marching band.
