King, Marshall Raising Funds Headed Into Runoff

Troy King and Steve Mashall

Troy King and Steve Marshall, who are locked in a heated campaign for the Republican nomination for state attorney general, raised a total of more than half a million dollars during the first three weeks of June, according to reports filed Monday with the Secretary of State’s Office.

King, a former attorney general who faces the incumbent in a July 17 GOP primary runoff, reported raising $302,120 and spending $298,523 from June 1 to June 22. That brought his total itemized contributions for the campaign to $1.75 million. He has spent $1.71 million and has a cash balance of $29,723.

A group of Tuscaloosa-based political action committees chaired by Michael Echols are by far King’s biggest contributors, accounting for $946,000 of his total. Those PACs and the amount they have contributed are Leadership PAC, $210,000; Cash PAC and ET PAC, $170,000 each; CMG PAC II, $162,000; Price PAC II, 129,000; and T-Town PAC II, $105,000.

Marshall raised a total of $257,475 between June 1 and June 22 and spent $40,490. The top donor to his campaign is RAGA Action Fund, with a total of $435,000 during the campaign. RAGA is an affiliate of the Washington-based Republican Attorney Generals Association. Other top contributors to his campaign are Progress PAC, which draws support mostly from businesses, $310,000; Raymond J. Harbert of Birmingham, $78,294, and Alabama Power Co. Employee PACs, $55,000.

The winner of the July 17 GOP runoff will face Democrat Joseph Siegelman, son of former Gov. Don Siegelman, in the November general election.
