Political experience: Ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2017 and the U.S. House in 2016. He was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2018; served as chairman of the Lauderdale County Democratic Executive Committee.
Professional experience: Worked as the patriarch and metropolitan archbishop of Zion Ministries; pastor of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church; and chancellor of St. James the Elder Theological Seminary.
Civic experience: Pastor of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Florence; member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1994; MBA from Regis University in 2003; a doctorate in religion from Christian Bible College in 2003; a doctorate in organization and management from Capella University in 2007; and a doctorate in Christian clinical psychology from St. James the Elder Theological Seminary in 2015.
Main issues: Boyd believes the three most important challenges facing the country are increasing labor force participation, making healthcare affordable to all and protecting voter rights. He said to address labor force participation, his staff would work to grow the middle class by building coalitions among educators, friends of labor and business leaders. He said he will also fight to expand Medicaid in Alabama and support healthcare reform that allows for greater access with lower costs. He said he will also fight for same-day voter registration, automatic voter registration and the restoration of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
