Political experience: Elected treasurer in 2010 and 2014; appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey in 2021 to fill out then-Treasurer John McMillan’s unexpired term.
Professional experience: Worked in banking, finance and investments with Citibank in New York, Crocker National Bank in Los Angeles, Coral Petroleum in Houston and Colonial Bank in Montgomery. Retired in 2007.
Civic experience: Member of the Montgomery Committee of 100 and the Class of XXIV of Leadership Alabama. Church of the Ascension in Montgomery, served as a member of the vestry; Montgomery Rotary Club past president; Alabama Shakespeare Festival, chairman of the board of directors; Montgomery Academy, past board president; Stanford University, board of trustees and chairman of the alumni association.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in economics from Stanford University, 1971, and a master’s degree in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, 1973.
Main issues: During his tenure as treasurer, Boozer has expanded the types of investments in which the state treasurer could invest state funds. In 2015, he worked with legislators on passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience act, which established a state-sponsored tax-exempt savings program for disability-related expenses. A needs-based college scholarship program was established to help first-time Alabama college enrollees and pays out approximately $1 million annually to students going to Alabama colleges. Staff now meets annually with 20 state agencies to review the objectives and performance of their investments that are individually managed by Treasury.
