Bessemer City Councilman Ron Marshall defeated Ves Marable in the runoff for the Democratic nomination for assistant tax collector of the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County.

Marshall will compete against the incumbent, former state legislator Johnny Curry, in the upcoming November general election. Curry was appointed to the position by Gov. Ivey after Eric Burks passed away suddenly last July.

With 177 of 178 boxes reporting, Marshall garnered 2,459 votes to Marable’s 1,534.

“I’ve been around Bessemer for a number of years, been on city council 14 years,” Marshall said. “I think the voters recognize my sincerity and my willingness to do what’s in the best interest of the people. I’ve always stood by that.

“I think they just see me as being an honest person, a person with integrity, and just always working for the better good of city and the people.”

Jacqueline Grant-Jones topped Pamela Wilson Cousins for the Jefferson County District Court Place No. 3 nomination. Jones amassed 4,198 votes and Cousins had 3,177.

Yashiba “Red” Blanchard won the race for Probate Judge Place No. 1 with 7,173. Yawanna Nabors McDonald followed with 4,459.

Provisional ballots will be counted on Tuesday at noon.
