2024 Election
Voters Go to Polls for Runoff in House D52 Seat

Voters are headed to the polls today to determine which Democrat — Kelvin Datcher or Frank Woodson — will be the Democratic nominee to fill the Alabama House of Representatives District 52 seat recently left vacant after former Rep. John Rogers resigned and pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges.
Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
House District 52 covers parts of Birmingham, including the Glen Iris, Powderly, Southwest Birmingham and West End communities; along with sections of Homewood, Mountain Brook, Bessemer and unincorporated Jefferson County. See the map here.
You can also check to see whether you live in the district and where you should go to vote on the secretary of state’s website.
Datcher and Woodson are the two left standing after no one won a majority in a six-candidate field in the June 18 Democratic primary.
One of them is likely to claim the seat for the next term. The Republican who had been running for his party’s nomination, Carlos Crum, dissolved his campaign last week. So, at the moment, there is no Republican name on the general election ballot.
Datcher has been Birmingham’s deputy director of community development since 2017. In 2016, he served as Alabama state director for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. Datcher has also worked for Alabama State University, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Jefferson County Health Department, REV Birmingham and the Birmingham City Council.
Nonprofit executive Woodson is president and CEO of CityServe Alabama. Between 2002 and 2016, he was the executive director for Mission Alabama.
In the primary, Datcher received 37.95% of the vote and Woodson received 17.78%.
The general election has been set for Oct. 1.
