Cavanaugh Leads in Fundraising, but Ainsworth Has Spent More So Far

Will Ainsworth and Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh boosted her advantage over opponent Will Ainsworth in fundraising last week as the campaign for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor entered its final two weeks.

Cavanaugh, president of the Alabama Public Service Commission, took in $185,500 during the period of June 23 to June 29, compared to $18,500 for Ainsworth, a state representative from Guntersville, according to financial disclosure reports the two filed this week with the Secretary of State’s Office. Cavanaugh reported spending $173,744 during the reporting period, and Ainsworth spent $288,317.

The latest reports boosted Cavanaugh’s monetary contributions to $1.84 million since the campaign began last year. She reported spending $1.58 million and a balance of $258,738.

Ainsworth has raised $1.16 million so far. He has spent $1.95 million and has a cash balance of $204,565.

The two will meet in a July 17 runoff for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, with the winner facing Willie Boyd Jr., who was unopposed for the Democratic nomination, in the November general election.

Cavanaugh’s campaign account has been boosted by $582,916 that was left over from her aborted run for governor and by $500,000 in loans from herself and her husband. Her largest donations have been $145,000 from Progress PAC of Montgomery, funded mostly by businesses including Blue Cross Blue Shield, McWane Inc. and Michelin North America; $90,000 from the Alabama Nursing Home Association’s CARE PAC; and $75,000 from Drummond Co. Inc. of Birmingham.

Ainsworth has loaned $1 million to his campaign. His largest contributors have been the Alabama Forestry PAC, $147,000; Gregory Rader of Columbus, Miss., $40,000; and Burkes Mechanical of Brent, $30,000.
