2018 Elections

Ivey Quadruples Maddox in Fundraising Ahead of the General Election

Gov. Kay Ivey and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox

Drawing financial support from deep-pocket supporters, Gov. Kay Ivey has collected more than four times as much in contributions as her Democratic challenger in the campaign leading to the November gubernatorial election.

Ivey collected $244,283 during June, according to a report filed Tuesday with the Secretary of State’s Office. That brought her total cash receipts to $4.69 million since the campaign began last year.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, the Democratic nominee, raised $182,919 last month, lifting his total for the campaign to $1.11 million.

With the Nov.6 election still four months away, Ivey reported a balance of $458,674 in her account. Maddox had a balance of $222,442. There is no July runoff in the race for the Democratic or Republican nomination as governor.

James W. “Jimmy” Rane, who is listed by Forbes Magazine as Alabama’s richest resident, is Ivey’s biggest donor, having given $300,000 so far. Known for his role as “the Yella Fella” in television commercials, Rane is the founder of Great Southern Wood Preserving of Abbeville.

Other top contributors to Ivey include Montgomery-based Franklin PAC and developer Louis W. Breland of Huntsville, $100,000 each; and Breland Homes LLC of Huntsville and the Beasley, Allen law firm of Montgomery, $95,000 each.

The top givers to Maddox are a half dozen Tuscaloosa-based PACs chaired Michael Echols. The committees have given a total of $381,400 to the Maddox campaign. ABC Merit PAC of Birmingham gave $26,000 to the Democratic nominee and GreeneTrack Inc. of Eutaw contributed $25,000.
