2018 Election
Marshall, Christie Lead Their Primary Fields in Fundraising for the AG Race
Fueled by hefty contributions from political action committees, incumbent Steve Marshall and former Attorney General Troy King drew in hundreds of thousands of dollars during April for their campaigns for the Republican nomination for attorney general.
The two hold substantial fundraising advantages over two other candidates in the GOP primary, former U.S. attorney Alice Martin and Birmingham lawyer Chris Bedsole.
Two Democrats running for their party’s nomination, James S. “Chris” Christie and Joseph Jay Siegelman, each brought in smaller amounts of campaign cash.
The primary elections will be June 5, with the winners meeting in the November general election. If no candidate gets a majority of the votes in the GOP primary, the outcome will be decided in a July 17 runoff election between the top two vote-getters.
Marshall’s campaign collected $222,360 in April, bringing his total to $1.6 million since the race began last year. His monthly total was boosted by a $100,000 contribution from Progress PAC on April 30. Progress PAC, chaired by Mike Kemp, lists its top contributors as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, Volkert Inc., McWane Inc., Michelin North America, Protective Life Corp. and Coleman Worldwide Moving.
RAGA Action Fund, an affiliate of the Republican Attorney Generals Association, is Marshall’s top overall contributor at $250,000. ProgessPAC has donated a total of $225,000 to his campaign.
King brought in $478,545 for the month to raise his total for the campaign to $998,662. His April collections included donations of $75,000 each from four Tuscaloosa-based PACs chaired by Michael Echols – CMG PAC II, Cash PAC, ET PAC and Leadership PAC.
For the entire campaign, six PACs chaired by Echols – including the four listed above, plus Price PAC II and T-Town PAC II – have given a total of $388,000 to King’s campaign. Among contributors to several of those six PACs are Extreme Development, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, Tom Coker & Associates, and the Beasley Allen and Cunningham Bounds law firms.
Martin, who was U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2001 to 2009 and later served in the state attorney general’s office, raised $98,510 in April, bringing her overall total to $616,206. Her biggest benefactors for the campaign are the Deserve Victory PAC of Montgomery, $73,750; and W.S. and Eloise Propst and D.S. Davidson of Huntsville, with $35,000.
Bedsole, a Birmingham lawyer who worked on the Donald Trump presidential campaign, has raised $274,188 throughout the campaign, including $10,050 last month. His largest contributions have been $50,000 each from Jim Bedsole of Meridian, Idaho, and R.B. Johnson of Hanceville. His campaign has been boosted by loans from himself of $300,000 each on June 30, 2017, Dec. 29, 2017 and March 30, 2018.
Christie has raised $147,457 during the campaign, including $38,130 in April. The Birmingham lawyer’s largest contribution so far was $10,000 from James S. Christie III of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Siegelman, son of former Gov. Don Siegelman, has collected $80,917, including $39,080 last month. The Cochran Firm PC of Dothan and W. Charles DeLoach Jr. of Blakely, Georgia, each gave $10,000 for his largest contributions.
