The Jefferson County Commission announced today its annual $18 million allocation to local boards of education. These are residents’ tax dollars going back to the community to improve education.

Funds will be disbursed as follows:

• Birmingham Board of Education     $4,150,965.62
• Fairfield Board of Education            $298,267.73
• Homewood Board of Education       $784,525.93
• Hoover Board of Education              $1,911,804.81
• Leeds Board of Education                 $298,535.11
• Midfield Board of Education            $187,123.80
• Mountain Brook Bd of Ed                 $794,999.54
• Tarrant Board of Education             $218,120.55
• Trussville Board of Education         $777,445.16
• Vestavia Hills Bd of Ed                      $1,316,218.97
• Jefferson County Bd of Ed                $6,605,582.49

Commissioners will present the checks in their respective districts. The money is distributed based on the number of students in each school district in Jefferson County. The commission voted three years ago to start these distributions and they will continue until outstanding warrants issued for the schools are retired.

A previous administration approved a 1-cent sales tax,” county manager Tony Petelos said. “Then the county went and borrowed a billion dollars. From that billion dollars, they divided the money up proportionally to the schools for any capital projects or capital debt.”

Schools can now also use the money from the refunded sales tax for other things, including technology.
