The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved selling a former AmSouth Bank building in Ensely to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity so it can establish a community center there.

The Mu Psi Lambda chapter of the fraternity intends to refurbish the building and transform it into a multi-purpose outreach center to serve as a resource to the Ensley community by eliminating blight, providing youth and community training programs and conducting other revenue-generating programs as they become available, according to the council’s agenda.

“Thank you so much for your service and staying in the Ensley community,” Councilor Hunter Williams said after the unanimous approval by the council. “Good luck with this property. I know that is has a very long way to go.”

Christopher Parham, president of the Mu Psi chapter, was among several dozen members at the meeting and thanked councilors for their support.

The fraternity will buy the building at 707 20th Street Ensley for $150,000. The fraternity focuses largely on the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity of the individual, according to its website, as well providing aid to help people achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.
